This film can be viewed as a personal essay/auto-fiction that mines my relationship with kawaii culture and cyberspace as a female otaku. Captivated by Saito Tamaki’s book Beautiful Fighting Girl, I saw a parallel between the beautiful girl’s persistent fighting and the intensive labour I often devote to my textile works. Combat and labour are both outward manifestations of a form of jouissance and excess. By juxtaposing excerpts of anime, essays, social media entries, and a video of my own hand being embroidered, the film oscillates between fictional and “real” time-space, and the Chinese and English language. To make such an animation is to animate fantasy and desire, trauma and hysteria, along with my personal critiques and insecurities towards the Internet era.
